Airborne radar applications find this type of antenna to be highly efficient. The mechanical structure is very rigid and thin. It is ideal for low swept-volume applications.
This design is limited, however, by the beam-broadening effects from the beam tilt of each array. First sidelobe levels of 25 dB, a gain of 31.5 dBi, azimuth beamwidth of 3.3°, elevation beamwidth of 8.0° with a weight of 7.2 pounds has been achieved for a 30-inch wide array.
The following are representative skewed-beam, traveling-wave panel arrays of these types.
