Antennas intended for mounting on high-performance gimbals must have extremely compact geometries to minimize the swept volume and radome size. They must be fabricated from lightweight materials. And their center of gravity must be close to the intersection of the motional axes to minimize motor torque. Lastly, they must have the highest possible aperture efficiency to minimize size.
Innovative parabolic reflector antennas are available with vertex-mounted feeds with very little protrusion behind the vertex. This antenna style permits the reflector to be brought very close to the motional axes. Reflectors are also available to attach to an elevation yoke so that the antenna center of gravity is coincident with these axes.
Lightweight flat plate printed circuit antennas are also available in selected sizes, frequencies and gains. For other types of flat plate arrays which may find application on a gimbal, please refer to Pages 70 - 78.
