ELECTRONIC NEWS-GATHERING ANTENNAS

Housed within a protective radome and mounted beneath a helicopter, this antenna relays 2 GHz ENG signals from a TV crew to a head end site. It is azimuthally steerable and incorporates a rotary joint. The antenna consists of a pair of disc-on-rod radiators having four remotely-selected polarization states. The pair is fed in phase for a maximum gain of 16 dBi. The 8455-801downlook antenna and the 8455-802 omni complete the ENG system.

This antenna operates from 2 - 2.7 GHz and has internal connections for polarization selection of vertical, horizontal linear or either sense of circular. Antenna gain is 16 dBi and dimensions are 23 inches long by 10 inches in diameter.

When used with any small reflector, this feedhorn can be remotely actuated for all four polarization states. It utilizes a small servo motor to change polarization and provides remote status indication. It operates over the allocated frequency range of 12.7 - 13.25 GHz. Antenna efficiencies of 60% can be achieved with a well-toleranced reflector. This feedhorn can also be used as an antenna with a gain of 11 dBi.

By means of a metal cone, this antenna exhibits superior sidelobe suppression of -21 dB, a useful feature when operating ENG equipment in urban canyons in which multipath propagation can occur. The antenna operates in the 1.73 - 1.84 GHz frequency band and has dual circular polarization which is remotely switch-selectable through a 24 VDC circuit. Antenna gain is 15.9 dBic, minimum. Overall length is 28 inches and weight is 6 pounds. Mounting is to a standard camera tripod.
